Electronics Manufacturing: A Shift from Imports to Exports

India's electronics manufacturing, particularly in largescale electronics (LSEM), has flourished under the PLI initiative. Once a major importer of mobile phones, India is now a net exporter. In 2023-24 alone, India produced 33 crore units domestically, compared to 5.8 crore in 2014-15, with a drastic reduction in imports and nearly five crore units exported. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in this segment has surged by approximately 254%, demonstrating the PLI Scheme’s positive influence on foreign investment.

Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices: Advancing Self-Reliance

India's pharmaceuticals and medical devices sector now ranks third globally by volume, with exports representing 50% of production. The PLI Scheme has greatly reduced dependency on imported raw materials, enabling domestic manufacturing of essential bulk drugs like Penicillin G. Additionally, technology transfer agreements have empowered India to produce 39 sophisticated medical devices, including CT scanners and MRI machines, strengthening India's medical self-sufficiency.
