Incentive (PLI) Schemes, crucial instruments in elevating domestic production, advancing technology, and attracting both local and foreign investment.
Launched in phases since 2020, the PLI Schemes aim to invigorate India’s manufacturing capabilities, fostering advancements in technology and luring substantial investments. With a total financial commitment of ₹1.97 lakh crore, the schemes cover 14 critical sectors, from electronics and pharmaceuticals to drones and specialty steel. These incentives are designed to expand production capacity, create substantial employment opportunities, stimulate exports, and minimize import dependency—all aligned with India’s vision for a 'Viksit Bharat' by 2047 under the banner of 'Atmanirbhar Bharat'.
As of June 2024, the PLI Schemes have significantly impacted India’s manufacturing landscape :
India's electronics manufacturing, particularly in largescale electronics (LSEM), has flourished under the PLI initiative. Once a major importer of mobile phones, India is now a net exporter. In 2023-24 alone, India produced 33 crore units domestically, compared to 5.8 crore in 2014-15, with a drastic reduction in imports and nearly five crore units exported. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in this segment has surged by approximately 254%, demonstrating the PLI Scheme’s positive influence on foreign investment.
India's pharmaceuticals and medical devices sector now ranks third globally by volume, with exports representing 50% of production. The PLI Scheme has greatly reduced dependency on imported raw materials, enabling domestic manufacturing of essential bulk drugs like Penicillin G. Additionally, technology transfer agreements have empowered India to produce 39 sophisticated medical devices, including CT scanners and MRI machines, strengthening India's medical self-sufficiency.
PLI incentives have spurred notable advancements in telecom and networking products, achieving a 60% import substitution rate. Major global tech companies have established production facilities in India, making the country a key exporter of 4G and 5G equipment. This growth reflects a significant stride toward India's self-reliance in telecommunications.
Drones and drone components have witnessed explosive growth, with turnover increasing sevenfold. This sector, largely led by MSMEs and start-ups, has attracted substantial investment and created numerous jobs, highlighting the scheme's success in fostering new and emerging industries.
As India celebrates the tenth anniversary of the 'Make in India' initiative, the achievements enabled by the PLI Schemes underscore the transformative power of focused industrial policies. These schemes are not only reshaping India's export portfolio from traditional commodities to high-value products but also reducing imports, promoting exports, and reinforcing India's aspiration to become a leading global manufacturing hub.
